NSW: Disabled boy awarded $4.5 million
A boy who was born severely disabled because his mother contracted a herpes-like virushas been awarded $4.5 million.
The award came after an appeal found she was infected while pregnant and working ata childcare centre.
JACOB HUGHES was born with cerebral palsy, neural deafness and mental retardation onAugust 1992, caused by cytomegalovirus or CMV, which is common among children in childcareenvironments.
LINDA HUGHES, a single mum from Newcastle in New South Wales, had sued Sydney Day NurseryChildren's Services, claiming she contracted the virus at work.
