Vic: Two children charged over fire

MELBOURNE, Dec 30 AAP - Two children are expected to be charged on summons over a fire
in Broadmeadows Valley Park, north of Melbourne yesterday.

Police said a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy were arrested in Broadmeadows yesterday
and were expected to be charged on summons with criminal damage by fire and car theft.

About 50 hectares of scrub and grass was burnt out in the fire which took 15 appliances
and crews from both the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) and the Country Fire Authority
(CFA) an hour and a half to extinguish.

The MFB said one crew trying to protect the playground equipment in the park had to
take cover when an air lock temporarily stopped water to their hoses as the grass fire
headed towards them.

But luckily the fire passed by them without incident, the MFB said.

The blaze started about 10.30am (AEDT).
