Vic: Students protest over uni fees in Melbourne
More than 500 tertiary students have taken to the streets of Melbourne in protest overproposed reforms to higher education.
University students from across Victoria have joined academics and community memberson the steps of the State Library as part of an Australian-wide day of action organisedby the National Union of Students.
The students are protesting against the deregulation of university fees, a 25 per centincrease in HECS and an expansion of the number of full fee-paying students.
All are measures they expect to be introduced in the federal government's May budget.
NUS national welfare officer SARAH MCDOWELL says the government reforms, universityeducation will only be available to the rich.
The NUS, which organised similar events in Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Perthand Sydney today, says further protests are being planned.
