NSW:Backyard fireworks 'illegal and deadly'

SYDNEY, Dec 31 AAP - New Year's Eve revellers are being reminded that backyard fireworks
are not only illegal but deadly.

General manager of WorkCover's Work Health and Safety Division John Watson said fireworks
displays could only be carried out by a person with an appropriate licence.

"Anyone caught using fireworks illegally face significant penalties and even jail sentences,"

he said in a statement.

"Although fireworks can be spectacular to watch, they are extremely dangerous and can
cause serious burns, catastrophic injuries, or death."

Over the past six months, about 500 kilograms of illegal fireworks have been seized in NSW.

"WorkCover continues to find prohibited fireworks and unauthorised fireworks in storage
inspections, including prohibited fireworks not used in displays," Mr Watson said.

In NSW the possession, use, storage and transport of display fireworks is restricted
to people holding an appropriate WorkCover NSW licence.

Licences are also required to sell, manufacture or handle fireworks without supervision.

People who assist in displays must be under the direct supervision of a licence holder,
Mr Watson says.

Anyone using fireworks without a current WorkCover licence and permit risks an on-the-spot
fine of up to $1,000.

Courts can impose a penalty of up to $27,500 and a 12 month jail term.
